It all began with my mom, Tish Cox, who learned to sew during summers with her fabulously chic grandmother. She always had a knack for it, though for years, she was just our amazing mom—driving us to figure skating practice and occasionally sewing for fun.
Then in 2010, everything changed. Her best friend and namesake to me, Kelly Sheridan Montavon, needed a dress for a SCAD event honoring Diane von Furstenberg. My mom made her very first dress and named it “The Kelly.” That night, Zac Posen stopped Aunt Kelly to ask, “Who made your dress?” Her reply: “Tish Cox!”—and that’s how it all started.
From our kitchen-turned-studio, she began making dresses for friends around Dallas. We grew up to the constant sound of a sewing machine. None of us realized then what she was building.
One day, her longtime friend Merry Vose called to say she was opening a boutique on W. Lovers Lane. My mom did a trunk show there—and sold over 60 pieces. After sewing nearly 300 garments herself, she realized it was time to find production and truly launch.
She’s been dressing Dallas ever since out of the little store with a lavender door.
Fast forward to 2020. During COVID, we used her leftover Liberty fabrics to sew masks, and that’s when inspiration struck. I was about to start at SMU and wanted to make a few easy throw-on tops from her fabrics. That’s how our “Perfect Tank” was born.
Right on cue, Merry called again—this time opening a third store, Clover, aimed at girls my age. It was the perfect space: a boutique for the daughters of Cabana’s loyal customers, many of whom already loved my mom’s designs. They quickly fell in love with mine too.
Through college, I spotted our Morgan Dress at every formal event. Each piece I created was a nod to my closest friends—just like my mom did in her early days.
Now, Sheridan for Tish is available at Clover, Cabanagirls.com, and For Now in Nantucket. We’ve created a one-stop shop, where mother and daughter collections live side-by-side—timeless pieces for every generation.
Welcome to our world.
